Back of a truck
Croatia
“Tell me why again we left Moldova?” Kiyro complains as they make their way to the borders of Croatia hitchhiking on the back of a farmer’s truck.
“If you’d have listened, I wouldn’t be so irritated by you always making me repeat myself,” said Sprint, who was trying to sleep. “We’re searching for Benehime, also known as the Red Princess. She is neither human nor vampire, but still has control over both of the races. To prevent her from governing the vampires to ultimate power and take over all of Slovenia, we were assigned to stop her.” He sighs. “Now, will you be able to remember all of this until we get to the border? Or must I tell you again in another ten minutes?”
The 19 year old boy groans. “But why us? We live way over in Moldova. Why must we waste our time traveling all the way to Slovenia when we could still making loads of gold back home? I don’t get it.”
“Because, you insolent fool,” Sprint shoots back. “We are the only ones who can do the damn job. Now shut up before I destroy you too.” He shifts over onto his side and closes his eyes, attempting to fall asleep until the vehicle ran over a dip in the road, throwing him up and falling back down with a hard thud. “Damn it,” he said under his breath.
“I don’t see why it had to be us though. I’m sure there are other annihilators around these parts that could do the job just as good as we could” argues Kiyro. I just think it’s really odd to send us, of all annihilators in the world, all the way over here, to the most forbidden place in the country.”
Sprint sighs. He knew why they were the ones traveling halfway across the country, but didn’t bother to tell Kiyro. He just wouldn’t understand. For over 6 years now of being a vampire annihilator, he had encountered many things that he would keep to himself. He never wanted to become an annihilator, but it was the only thing he was good at. He had the biggest grudge on the vampire race ever since he was a little kid. His family ran the annihilators business in Moldova. When his parents come home, covered in blood, they would always tell him; vampires are the foulness of the world. We must destroy them while we can, to make the world perfect again.
But Sprint’s older sister, Blaekrouz, would tell him otherwise. She was fond of the vampire race and thought both humans and vampires could live in a world they could coexist in peace. She would always say; Vampires mean no harm to us. They are just trying to survive, like you and i. Mother and father wouldn’t understand. One day Sprint, you will learn why they have come to our lands. The vampires mean no harm, they just want to live. He cared for his sister and looked up to her, as a role model.
Then one night, when he was 12, Sprint snuck out of the house and followed Blaekrouz. He wanted to protect her when he turned a corner and saw her with someone holding her close. Sprint got closer and his eyes shot open. There, a vampire had his arms wrapped around Blaekrouz and was saying something to her. Sprint got even closer to try to hear what he was saying.
“…wouldn’t forgive myself if I did,” said the vampire.
“You only need a little, it will be alright,” Blaekrouz responded.
“You mean so much to me, Rouz. I…love you.” He whispered as he got closer and closer to her.
Sprint heard a gasp from his sister and finally realizes what was happening. The vampire was sucking her blood. How could this happen! Sprint thought to himself. Why would she do something like this! His heart was pounding. He wanted to run away, but instead he ran after his sister, screaming for her. Blaekrouz turned and the vampire stopped immediately. Sprint ran into her outstretched arms before the vampire could get to him. Sprint cried hard on her shoulder and felt warm liquid from her neck.
Blaekrouz whispered in Sprint’s ear. “Why did you follow me? Why didn’t you just stay home like all good boys?”
The vampire came forward but she stopped him. “Why must you protect this boy” he growled.
“Because,” she said. “He is my little brother.”
“Sprint!” Kiyro yelled as Sprint woke, realizing it was just a dream. “We’re here.”
